Roof tiles are designed mainly to keep out rain, and are traditionally made from locally available materials such as terracotta or slate. Modern materials such as concrete, metal and plastic are also used and some clay tiles have a waterproof glaze to further improve their lifespan.
Longevity: A tile roof can last more than 30 years, when installed correctly. Clay and concrete tile roofs have been known to withstand hail, high winds, and even fire. Also, unlike wood, a tiled roof should never naturally decay.
Maintenance: It is very rare for tile roofs to require repairs or maintenance unless they break due to uncommon incidents like accidental heavy impact.
Environment: Tile and Slate roofs are able to be made from earth minerals, not solely synthetic materials. This means they can be recycled when they are removed. The heavy thermal mass of tiles helps regulate indoor temperatures cutting back on energy costs.
Variety: Clay, concrete, and slate tiles come in a wide variety of colours and styles to match any home style, from Medieval to Contemporary European. Some styles even resemble traditional shingles or wood shakes. This means whatever your style, there will be an option for you.
